Obituary for MSA Past-President Shirley Austin, M.D.

It gives me great pain to announce that Dr. Shirley Austin passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2013. She was 91 years old. She was the President of Michigan Society of Anesthesiology from 1968-1969 and the founding member of the Department of Anesthesiology at Children's Hospital of Michigan.

A legendary child advocate, respected teacher and accomplished clinical anesthesiologist, Dr. Shirley Austin introduced the modern anesthesiology practice to Children's Hospital of Michigan. Trained under the renowned Margo Deming M.D. and a contemporary of Dr. C.Everett Coop at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, Dr. Austin came to Detroit in 1954 to begin a new pediatric anesthesia program.  Surgeons at CHM began to realize the importance of pediatric anesthesia in their endeavor. As chief of pediatric anesthesia, she incorporate leading edge anesthesia practices which dramatically improved care for the children. She was always a devoted care giver, spending long hours with patients both in the operating room and recovery room, as well as, on the pediatric floor. Dr. Austin founded one of the first fellowships in pediatric anesthesia. She retired in 1978 after a long and illustrious carrier.

Respectfully submitted Anchi Wu, M.D.
