In his second term, Dr. Michael Lewis will continue to lead advancements in patient safety, quality care

LANSING, Mich. — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has reappointed Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists (MSA) President Dr. Michael Lewis to the Michigan Board of Medicine for the 2024-2027 term. The appointment is Lewis’ second, and he will serve as a representative for physicians on the board.

In his role, Lewis will continue to work with the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs to oversee the practice of medical doctors in the state and promote and protect the public’s health, safety and welfare.

“I am honored to continue my duty of maintaining the highest safety standards and best practices for physicians in the state,” he said. “I look forward to working alongside the brightest medical leaders to advance health care innovation, patient safety and quality care for Michiganders.”

In addition to serving on the Michigan Board of Medicine and MSA, Lewis is the Joseph L. Ponka chair in the Henry Ford Health Department of Anesthesiology, Pain Management and Perioperative Medicine and interim chair of the Department of Anesthesia in the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University. He is also a professor of anesthesiology at Wayne State University

“Anesthesiologists are unique in that we are the physicians responsible for ensuring the highest levels of patient safety and care before, during and after a procedure or operation, serving patients at their most vulnerable and partnering with specialties across the health care system,” said Dr. Neeju Ravikant, MSA Past President. “In this way, Dr. Lewis brings a distinctive and thoughtful perspective to the state’s medical objectives, and his reappointment marks a proud moment for all of us at MSA. Dr. Lewis’ unparalleled service to the medical field means he will be a great advocate for patients and their loved ones on the Michigan Board of Medicine.”
