Anesthesia technologists play critical role in patient safety as part of physician-led Anesthesia Care Team

In the operating room, patients are unconscious and without a voice. They rely on the highest standard of care during their most vulnerable time.

Physician anesthesiologists ensure their safety and care by leading the Anesthesia Care Team. Anesthesia technologists are another crucial member of the Anesthesia Care Team, and Anesthesia Tech Week, March 31-April 4, is an annual celebration of these highly skilled professionals.

“The partnership between physician anesthesiologists and anesthesia technologists is a valuable one that plays a critical role in patient safety and efficiency in the operating room,” said Dr. Matt Dellaquila, president of the Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists. “During Anesthesia Tech Week, we celebrate these essential health care professionals and recognize their importance as part of a physician-led Anesthesia Care Team.”

Anesthesia technologists are often behind-the-scenes safety experts in the operating room. They help ensure every piece of anesthesia equipment is functioning properly, preventing complications before they arise.

A career as an anesthesia technologist is a rewarding one, requiring technical skills, critical thinking, and the ability to respond quickly in high pressure situations. The Anesthesia Care Team relies on technologists’ ability to understand how equipment works and how each piece of equipment applies to a given clinical situation.

Nada El-achi is an anesthesia technologist instructor at Wayne County Community College, helping train future technologists to help support Michigan’s growing surgical demand as a result of an aging population that requires more procedures.

“Being an anesthesia technologist is a valuable, flexible career option that is in high demand in Michigan at our hospitals and trauma centers,” El-achi said. “This week, we celebrate these professionals and encourage Michiganders interested in a career in the medical field to research the wide variety of opportunities for anesthesia technologists, and in anesthesiology, here at home.”
