MSA thanks Moolenaar for continued support for veterans to receive highest quality of health care
MIDLAND, Mich. – The Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists (MSA) is applauding Congressman John Moolenaar (R-Midland) for his continued support for our nation’s veterans and for his leadership in helping ensure veterans receive the highest quality of health care in Michigan and across America.
Recently, Moolenaar sent a letter to Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Secretary Denis McDonough on the importance of physician-led anesthesia care for our nation’s veterans and to retain this gold-star model at the VA.
“The anesthesia team model includes a highly trained anesthesiologist working together with nurse anesthetists to provide safe anesthesia care,” said Dr. Neeju Ravikant, MSA past president. “This proven model is the highest standard of care, with its standard used across 96% of America, and the standard in all the nation’s top hospitals.”
The letter cited a 2022 study that found that removing physicians from care teams at the VA led to increased patient mortality and increased spending by $160 million per year due to higher resource utilization and worse outcomes when compared to a physician-led team model.
“In surgery, where seconds can mean the difference between life and death, it is critical to have the highest qualified personnel caring for patients,” Ravikant said. “The Michigan Society of Anesthesiologists thanks Congressman Moolenaar for reaffirming his dedication to providing Veterans with the safe and quality care they have earned.”
