Resident Policy & Advocacy Research Rotation

MSA is pleased to announce the creation of an Anesthesiology Policy and Advocacy Research Rotation — a two-week, ABA-approved elective designed for anesthesiology residents.

This immersive rotation will provide both remote and hands-on experiences at the Michigan Capitol, where participants will work directly alongside the MSA Committee on Governmental Affairs. Through direct exposure to the legislative and regulatory process, residents will observe and participate in real-time advocacy efforts related to anesthesiology and broader healthcare policy.

The goals of the rotation are to help future anesthesiologists develop a deeper understanding of the policies which shape healthcare delivery and to gain practical experience in physician advocacy. Emphasis will be placed on understanding how organized medicine works to protect patient safety, preserve equitable care, and support the sustainability of healthcare practices.

By engaging residents early in policy and advocacy work, this rotation aims to cultivate informed physician-advocates who are prepared to represent both their patients and their profession throughout their careers.

Submissions for the 2026 rotation have closed, submissions for the 2027 rotation will be posted in early 2027.

ASA Resident Resources

ASA LEG CON

Each Spring MSA sends a delegation of attendings and residents to Washington D.C. to participate in the ASA Legislative Conference (LEG CON). This is a great opportunity for residents to get familiar with the advocacy process, legislation at the national level, and meet with Michigan’s Representatives and Senators. MSA offers a stipend for resident attendees selected through their residency program. If you are interested in attending the conference, please contact your program director.

Resident Delegates to ASA

Each state component is alloted resident delegates according to the number of resident members in the state. Resident Delegates sit for the Resident House of Delegates at the ANESTHESIOLOGY Annual Meeting in October. MSA provides a stipend to resident delegates according to our allotment and residents are selected from within their program. Please contact your program director for more information.
